Local Court Experience Informs Your Athens Traffic Defense
Attorney Jason Slider’s prior work with the Office of the Solicitor General for Athens-Clarke County and as a staff attorney for the State Court of Clarke County informs our approach to local traffic cases. At Slider Law, we represent drivers facing traffic violations in Athens and Madison County.
Jason Slider brings more than 20 years of criminal law experience to cases that can affect a driver’s record, license, insurance, and court obligations. He has handled more than 100 jury trials throughout Georgia. We draw on that courtroom experience to examine the charge, evidence, and procedural requirements of each traffic case.

Traffic Violations We Evaluate in Athens
Traffic matters range from moving-violation citations to allegations with more serious legal consequences. The issues requiring review depend on the alleged offense, stated speed, location, driving history, and instructions printed on the citation.
Elevated traffic allegations can include:
- Reckless driving
- Aggressive driving
- Racing
- Fleeing or eluding an officer
- Hit and run
Athens-Clarke County generally requires drivers charged with aggressive driving, reckless driving, fleeing or eluding an officer, or hit and run to appear in court in person rather than resolving the citation by mail. Drivers need to identify how the charge is being handled rather than assume every citation follows the same process.
License and insurance consequences depend on the charge, final disposition, and driver’s existing record. A traffic ticket attorney can review those factors without promising a reduction, dismissal, or particular licensing or insurance result.
Traffic Courts & Citation Review in Athens-Clarke County
A citation should identify the alleged violation and provide court or response instructions. Before responding, we can identify the assigned court, determine the applicable requirements, examine available evidence, and assess potential resolution options.
Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court has jurisdiction over state misdemeanor traffic violations and county ordinance violations. The criminal caseload of Athens-Clarke County State Court also includes driving under the influence offenses and traffic offenses. The proper route depends on the allegation and the information assigned to the individual case.
Personal Court Appearances
Whether a driver must appear personally depends on the charge, the court’s requirements, and the circumstances of the case. We review the citation and available court information before discussing what participation may be required. Drivers shouldn’t assume that paying a citation or missing the listed date will resolve every obligation.
Evidence & Response Options
Traffic representation can include examining the citation, available reports, and other evidence related to the allegation. We also consider the driver’s record and potential licensing consequences when evaluating the available options. Because the same general offense can raise different issues from one citation to another, case-specific legal advice requires an individual review.

Legal Service With A Personal Touch
Georgia Driver’s-License Points & Super Speeder Fees
Under Georgia’s point system, the Georgia Department of Driver Services assigns between 2 and 6 points per conviction, depending on the offense. A driver who accumulates 15 points within 24 months will be suspended under that system. The effect of a pending citation therefore can’t be evaluated solely by the fine amount.
Georgia’s Super Speeder law imposes an additional $200 state fee after a conviction for driving at least 75 mph on a two-lane road or at least 85 mph on any road. This fee is separate from the consequences imposed by the court. Failure to pay it within 120 days results in automatic license suspension.
What to Check After Receiving a Traffic Citation
A traffic citation identifies the alleged offense, assigned court or response instructions, and deadlines requiring prompt attention. These details can shape both the procedure and potential consequences.
Review the following before taking action:
- Alleged offense: Confirm the exact violation and any stated speed.
- Court assignment: Identify the named court and the instructions provided.
- Response deadline: Note every listed date and required action.
- Driving record: Consider existing points and prior case dispositions.
Considerations for Out-of-State Drivers
Drivers cited outside their home state need to determine the assigned court’s requirements and consider the possible effect on their driving privileges. Distance doesn’t eliminate a court obligation, and licensing consequences may extend beyond Georgia. What follows depends on the specific charge, disposition, and licensing authorities involved.
Our traffic lawyer can assess an Athens-issued ticket based on its allegations, deadlines, court route, and potential driving-record consequences. We can also clarify whether the available information indicates that a personal appearance may be required, although the court controls its procedures.
Request a Free Traffic Ticket Case Assessment
We offer a free case assessment and free initial consultation for drivers seeking guidance about a traffic violation. Have the citation available so we can review the exact charge, listed court, deadlines, and other relevant details. Our assessment focuses on the individual citation rather than a generalized prediction about the result.
